Analysis of Vehicular Delay during Off Peak Hours and Determining Level of Service

Abstract

: A traffic signal plays an important role in overall safety and efficiency of traffic operations at an intersection. Delay and queuing process are the main characteristics of such an intersection which help in analyzing and designing the intersection for a particular level of service. .). However delay is a parameter that is not easily determined due to the non deterministic nature of the arrival and departure processes at the intersection The type of operation strategy and signal timings utilized are typically based on designed operation of the intersection at a desired level of service during peak traffic condition. However, during off peak traffic periods same strategy could cause extensive vehicle delay when much lower traffic volume is present.

The main objective of the study is to analyze the vehicular delay occurring in off peak hours and to determine the related level of service.
